Process Capability Study Excel Template
Download a practical Excel template to plan a traceable capability study, record time-ordered measurements and prepare clean data for Cp, Cpk, Pp and Ppk analysis.
Use the template to collect study context and measurements. Analyse the completed measurement data in Qhubio’s free Process Capability & Performance Calculator.
.xlsx · 3 sheets · no login, email or payment · no macros
The workbook is a data-collection template. Qhubio is the analysis workspace.
The workbook does not calculate or certify Cp, Cpk, Pp or Ppk, and does not prove process stability, MSA adequacy, normality or customer acceptance. Use the applicable drawing, customer requirement, Control Plan and study procedure.
What is included in this Excel template
- Study setup — study details, specification fields (LSL, USL, optional target, units) and study controls.
- Production traceability — machine, line, tool/cavity, material lot, shift, operator and measurement system.
- Measurements — 250 blank, time-ordered rows with context columns for each value.
- A clean Measurement value column ready to paste into the Process Capability & Performance Calculator.
- Read me — concise instructions and limitations.
How to use the template for a capability study
- Confirm purpose, specifications and acceptance requirement.
- Complete the study setup details.
- Collect representative measurements in production time order.
- Record special causes, adjustments and traceability.
- Copy the measurement values into Qhubio for analysis.
For planning guidance, see how to plan a process capability study.
Why time order and traceability matter
A histogram alone can hide drift, lot effects, machine differences, tool wear and operator-related variation. Recording values in production order, with the context behind each measurement, lets an engineer investigate these effects before interpreting any index. It also helps explain the difference between short-term and overall variation — see Cp vs Cpk and Cpk vs Ppk.
What this template does not replace
- An approved Control Plan
- Customer-specific requirements
- A valid MSA / Gage R&R study
- A stability / control-chart assessment
- The Qhubio Process Capability Calculator
- Engineering judgement
Process capability study template FAQ
Is this Excel template free?
Yes. The workbook downloads immediately with no account, email address or payment. The Qhubio Process Capability & Performance Calculator used for analysis is also free.
Can I use this template for PPAP?
You can use it to collect and organise data for an initial study, but the customer-specific PPAP requirements, Control Plan and approved procedures govern the study. The workbook does not establish PPAP approval.
How many measurements should I collect for a capability study?
Follow the sampling plan defined by your customer requirement or internal procedure. The number depends on study purpose, subgroup strategy and the variation sources the study must represent. The template provides 250 blank rows and can be extended.
Should measurements be entered in time order?
Yes. Record values in production order and do not sort them afterwards. Time order lets an engineer see drift, shifts, tool wear and lot effects that a histogram alone can hide.
Does this Excel template calculate Cpk?
No. It is a data-collection template only. It contains no Cp, Cpk, Pp or Ppk formulas. Copy the Measurement value column into the Qhubio calculator for analysis.
Can I use this template for machine capability and process capability studies?
Yes. Record the study purpose and the traceability context. The governing requirement determines the sampling method and acceptance criterion for each study type.
What should I do after completing the template?
Confirm LSL, USL, target and units, review whether the data represent the intended process condition, then paste the populated Measurement value column into the Process Capability & Performance Calculator.
