    Process Capability Study Checklist

Prepare a more reliable capability study before you calculate Cp, Cpk, Pp or Ppk.

    Is your capability study ready?

Use this as a practical pre-study check. A completed checklist improves confidence, but it does not prove process capability.

    1.Specification readiness
    2.Measurement-system readiness
    3.Sampling and data readiness
    4.Process-stability readiness
    5.Traceability and decision readiness

Why prepare before calculating Cp and Cpk?

An index compresses a study into a number; it cannot repair weak source data. Unapproved limits, unsuitable measurement methods or changing process conditions can make a precise-looking result misleading. Establish the evidence first, then interpret what the calculation can support.

How to conduct a process capability study

What should be checked before a process capability study?

Confirm controlled specifications and consistent units. Evaluate measurement suitability, collect representative time-ordered observations and define subgrouping where needed. Identify process changes and special causes. Record the characteristic, production context and decision requirement so another engineer can follow the study.

Cp, Cpk, Pp and Ppk: when should each be used?

Use Cp/Cpk to describe capability based on an appropriate within-process variation estimate. Use Pp/Ppk to describe performance using overall variation across the study data. Choose the model to match the data structure and study purpose; neither substitutes for checking stability.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a process capability study?

A capability study evaluates measured process variation and centering against approved specification limits. Its interpretation depends on representative data, an appropriate measurement system and the process conditions during the study.

How many measurements do I need for a capability study?

There is no universal count suitable for every study. Follow the applicable customer or study-plan requirements, allow for subgroup structure and production variation, and recognize the uncertainty of estimates from small samples.

Do I need a gage R&R before calculating Cpk?

The measurement system must be fit for the characteristic and intended decision. Gage R&R can provide important evidence where repeatability and reproducibility matter; the appropriate evaluation depends on the measurement method and applicable requirements.

Can I calculate Cpk if the process is unstable?

A number can be calculated, but instability undermines using it as a reliable prediction of capability. Investigate special causes and assess stability before relying on capability indices for decisions.

What is the difference between Cp/Cpk and Pp/Ppk?

Cp and Cpk use within-process variation; Pp and Ppk use overall variation across the selected data. Cp and Pp describe spread relative to tolerance, while Cpk and Ppk also account for centering relative to the nearest specification limit.
