    Why AIAG-VDA changed FMEA

The 2019 AIAG-VDA handbook fundamentally changed how automotive FMEAs are developed. The traditional RPN-driven approach was replaced by Action Priority, the workflow was reorganized into seven structured steps, and Prevention Controls were separated from Detection Controls.

The objective was simple: create more consistent risk decisions and reduce the variability caused by spreadsheet-based FMEA implementations.

    Why spreadsheets struggle with AIAG-VDA

Most AIAG-VDA implementation problems are not methodology problems. They are spreadsheet problems.

    • Action Priority tables implemented incorrectly.
    • Prevention and Detection controls mixed together.
    • Inconsistent Severity, Occurrence and Detection scales.
    • No audit trail.
    • No reviewer workflow.
    • No version control.
    • No traceability between revisions.

During customer audits and PPAP reviews, these weaknesses become visible immediately.

    Deterministic Action Priority calculation

Action Priority is not a formula. It is a decision matrix.

Many Excel templates attempt to recreate AIAG-VDA logic using formulas, which often leads to incorrect prioritization.

Qhubio calculates Action Priority directly from the official AIAG-VDA decision table, ensuring that Severity always receives the intended weight.
