    The FMEA Standard: AIAG-VDA, IEC 60812 and IATF 16949

    There is no single global "FMEA standard". In practice, three reference frameworks cover almost every organization: AIAG-VDA (2019), IEC 60812 and the quality-management framework IATF 16949.     What is the FMEA standard?

    FMEA itself is a method, not a single document. The "standard" is whichever reference your industry, customer or quality system requires you to follow. In 2026 the most relevant references are the AIAG-VDA FMEA Handbook (automotive), IEC 60812 (general industry and functional safety context) and customer-specific requirements layered on top — for example Ford CSR, VW Formel Q, Stellantis SQ.

    Underneath them all, ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949 require risk-based thinking, of which FMEA is the most widely accepted implementation in manufacturing.

    How automotive uses the FMEA standard

    IATF 16949 does not define an FMEA method itself. It requires a documented risk-analysis approach; in practice every major OEM and Tier-1 mandates the AIAG-VDA 2019 handbook plus their own customer-specific requirements. PFMEAs and DFMEAs are reviewed during APQP, locked at PPAP, and expected to be live documents during serial production.

    What auditors actually expect

    • Evidence the 7-step AIAG-VDA process was followed (or a documented equivalent).
    • Structure and function analysis present — not just a failure-mode list.
    • Action Priority (not RPN) used to drive prioritization on automotive programs.
    • Alignment between the PFMEA and the Control Plan.
    • FMEA updated after design changes, field issues or process changes — see the audit checklist.
    • Cross-functional team evidence (attendance, roles) per the team roles guide.
