Excel is the default for small teams and one-off PFMEAs. It is free, ubiquitous and easy to share. The downsides appear during serial production: version drift, broken formulas, inconsistent Action Priority calculations and weak audit traceability. The detailed limits are covered in the P-FMEA Excel template guide.
Desktop FMEA tools (APIS IQ-RM, PLATO SCIO, Relyence) carry strong structure analysis and deep automotive support, but require installation, license servers, and dedicated training. They remain common in OEM and Tier-1 environments but rarely fit smaller suppliers.
Web-based FMEA software (such as the Qhubio FMEA software) keeps the structured AIAG-VDA fields of legacy tools while removing installation, license-server and version-drift pain. AP is calculated deterministically, edits are auditable, and the FMEA can be generated from process inputs using the FMEA generator.
